Since we are thumbing through Milton Mayer’s They Believed They Were Free this month, our PD staff wanted to kickoff the week with a glance back at comments made by Turkey’s President Erdogan about the 20th century’s most hated Taurus.
Back in 2016, when Recep Tayyip Erdogan was already laying the foundation for greater executive powers, during a press conference after he returned from Saudi Arabia, when describing the wonders of a stronger executive or presidential system, he touted Hitler’s Germany.
Oh yeah, nothing convinces the masses like invoking Hitler’s Germany.
Praising the ability to have a strong executive and unified state, Erdogan said, “There are already examples in the world. You can see it when you look at Hitler’s Germany.”
After the press conference and collective gasp/record scratch, Erdogan’s Office issued the following statement explaining that, “Erdogan’s ‘Hitler’s Germany’ metaphor has been distorted by some news sources and has been used in the opposite sense… The important thing is to pursue fair management that serves the nation.”
Right, exactly. It is super important to have fair management serving the nation for— what? A 1000 years?
