Letting out his inner Frenchmen, President (are we sure his title wasn’t changed to Supreme Glorious One?) Erdogan just declared a State of Emergency for the next 3 months.
In Turkey, an État d’urgence translates to allowing Erdogan to bypass Parliament when suspending rights and drafting new laws. The Turkish Constitutional Court (what’s left of it) will also be put on the sidelines for the next 3 months.
After vowing that, “All the viruses within the armed forces will be cleansed,” President Erdogan quickly moved to inoculate his Nation by closing 600+ schools, arresting or firing at least 50,000 people and banning academics from leaving the country.
Speaking of banning, the State of Emergency also means that Erdogan can ban publications at will, along with banning public gatherings and imposing citizen curfews.
Remember though, according to President Erdogan the State of Emergency is, “In no way against democracy, the law and freedoms.”
