The United States isn’t the only country to experience a transfer of power last week, as Gambia’s expert on all things gay Yahya Abdul-Aziz Jemus Junkung Jammeh finally conceded his December loss to new President Adama Barrow and left the country—with only the clothes on his back, an extra $11.4 Million from Gambian taxpayer coffers, and a Rolls-Royce or two.
Starting a new life in Equatorial Guinea at 51, let’s take a quick look back at some of Yahya Jammeh’s greatest hits over the last 22 years of tyranny.
To start, we have his take on Barack Obama’s Punish-your-enemies comment, “I will develop the areas that vote for me, but if they don’t vote for me, don’t expect anything.”
Second on our list is Yahya Jammeh’s understanding of the need for a free press, “If I want to ban any newspaper, I will, with good reason.”
Then there was his fascination with medical science, “I am not a witch doctor, and in fact, you cannot have a witch doctor. You are either a witch or a doctor.”
No list would be complete of course, without his lamenting of Exotic Bird Bingo, “I have never seen (a) homosexual chicken or turkey.”
Let’s hope retirement sticks, Jammeh.
