A doctor in Saudi Arabia found himself in hot water with the religious police recently for flying a flag at his home.
Was it a Daash flag? An EU flag? No, none of those.
Unfortunately this doting father had purchased a flag online that his daughter thought was pretty, and that pretty flag just so happened to be the rainbow one.
You know, the one universally associated with homosexuals.
For a dad in Delaware this whole incident might seem heartwarming, but for a Saudi citizen where homosexuality is punishable by chemical castration, imprisonment and death it turned out to be a bad move.
After a full scale investigation, the religious police of Saudi Arabia ended up believing the man’s story that he purchased the flag for his daughter and had no idea about its gay connotations, releasing him from jail and allowing him to just remove the flag and pay a fine.
To be fair though, keeping up with flags and their meanings can be hard, which is why last week you didn’t see anyone on social media change their icons to the Belgium flag, because let’s face it, it looked a little too much like the German flag and 70 some odd years from the Holocaust is still too soon to be collectively promoting anything German.
