The 1939 film starring Clark Gable.Since our PD Book Club pick for the this month is To Kill a Mocking Bird, our staff felt that we should also highlight another American classic now deemed too racist for modern society.

The Orpheum Theatre in Memphis, Tennessee made the brilliant move this last summer to cancel their 34-year tradition of screening Gone With the Wind, due to what they claim to be the film’s racially insensitive content. The film based on the 1936 novel by Margaret Mitchell.

According to Bret Batterson, the Orpheum’s President, “As an organization whose stated mission is to ‘Entertain, educate and enlighten the communities it serves,’ the Orpheum cannot show a film that is insensitive to a large segment of its local population.”

How educational and enlightening of them.
