Yes, Students for Justice in Palestine want to make sure that the chickpea delight isn’t allowed on campus if it comes from the Israeli brand Sabra.
Morally Unacceptable Hummus
According to the organization’s petition, “By selling Sabra, Swarthmore is an accessory to the occupation of Palestine. We call upon President Smith to affirm the dignity of Palestinian life, recognize the illegal occupation of Palestinian land, and deshelve all current Sabra products and end their future sale at Swarthmore College.”
Not on board is the Swarthmore Students for Israel organization that has called this hummus ban an, “Effectively anti-Semitic movement which seeks to delegitimize and ultimately eliminate the State of Israel.”
Instead of petitioning, the Swarthmore Students for Israel have started their own fundraiser that hopes to promote co-existence between Israeli Arabs and Jews.
Perhaps that is a better approach than trying to ban a snack food.
