Memory Lane Monday: Weaves in the Suburbs

Creative license? As always, beauty supply stores are hit hardest when social justice comes to town.To start off this week, we’re going to set the record straight that apparently it’s not just American Olympic swimmers that lie, but news networks too.

While last week rioters in Milwaukee decided to do some discount back-to-school shopping after an armed, black repeat-offender was killed by a black cop, CNN’s Ana Cabrera and Carol Costello wanted their viewers to know that the deceased’s sister Sherelle Smith was calling for peace.Carol Costello later said, “I regret that second part of her statement was not included.”

The heartwarming package CNN showed was of Smith saying, “Don’t bring the violence here and the ignorance here.”

However, what Smith actually said was, “Don’t bring the violence here and the ignorance here. Stop burning down shit we need in our community. Take that shit to the suburbs. Burn they shit down. We need our shit. We need our weaves. I don’t wear it, but we need it.”

Weave justice.Clearly CNN’s cliff notes version of Smith’s comment is a bit Common Core-esque, which is a real shame as CNN still could have peddled their Sherelle-Smith-is-reasonable line while using the whole clip since she clearly states that though she doesn’t wear a weave, Smith still feels that others in her community should be able to.

Talk about level-headed.
