Memory Lane Monday: Spooner on Taxes

Penn Jillette, a modern day juggling Lysander Spooner.Lysander Spooner (January 19, 1808 – May 14, 1887).Springtime may mean that the nickel and diming and outright theft of taxation is in full bloom for much of the world, but instead of shaking our fists or downing half a bottle of Maker’s Mark with another half a bottle of Xanax, let’s just break down the concept.

For this, the PD Staff brings you the genius of Lysander Spooner, the man whom in the 1800’s took on slavery and the US Postal Service.

“If taxation without consent is not robbery, then any band of robbers have only to declare themselves a government, and all there are legalized.”

Craving a little more Spooner? Well, how about his musing on individuals keeping their political liberty?

“The only security men can have for their political liberty, consists in keeping their money in their own pockets.”

Here’s a little more Spooner to get you through the week.

In fact, forget about the bourbon and prescription drugs, just curl up with Spooner’s Natural Law or No Treason the Constitution of No Authority and we guarantee you that you’ll feel a lot better in the morning.

You’re welcome.

I'm not sure why Spooner doesn't get more love by today's libertarians. Maybe it as something to do with how much he looks like Marx.
