October’s Book- Auschwitz: A Doctor’s Eyewitness Account

A drawing of Auschwitz done by David Olere.PD’s second book selection for our club takes the questions presented in Andy Andrews’ How Do You Kill 11 Million People and adds more historical precedence, that help us to examine human nature, and the will to believe authority, and that will to survive.

Auschwitz: A Doctor’s Eyewitness Account , by Hungarian doctor, Miklos Nyiszli, details his experience working with the Sonderkommando. Nyiszli worked under the Dr. Joseph Mengele, nicknamed the Angel of Death. Despite the usual four month lifespan allotted to Jews in his position, Nyiszli managed to survive, through numerous close-calls, and random acts of divine providence.

PD picked this book for the month of October, because it shows just how demonic and sadistic people can be, and despite how terrifyingAuschwitz: A Doctor's Eyewitness Account. moments in history are, it is through them-those moments- that human nature can be seen, at its worst and best.

With ‘Auschwitz’ just being in the title, we don’t need to tell you that this book is disturbing. Obviously, it is. Obviously after reading it, you won’t be the same.

But isn’t that the point?
